The Power of a Low Bar
I usually draft first thing in the morning.
I habit stack it, after feeding the pug. Feeding the pug is a good trigger because I do it every day without fail. I feed the pug and then I grab my old laptop and my earplugs and my phone (because I can’t look anything up anymore on my old laptop) and then I get comfy and write some new words.
But the morning after I got to the end of my revision project, I woke up with two things in mind that I wanted to fix.
I threw back the covers and ran to the computer to fix them, as one does. But then the pug was asking me to feed her. So I took a break to do so, and then I came back to keep fixing, and then she was asking for her walk. So once I finished the fixes, I did that too, and then my day was off and running.
And I didn’t get my words in.
But!
A while ago I decided I could call it a successful writing day if I got 250 new words done. Just 250 words. I can always fit in 250 words.
And that night, after not getting my words done in the morning, I kept thinking about my words. Just 250 words. I can fit in 250 words.
But when?
Once my day gets going, things just show up that need to get done. Chores. Meals. The pug has me on a schedule. The SO’s good about me writing in the morning and will leave me alone until I stop, but once I put the computer away, I’m a free for all. And even if I don’t put it away, he considers the evening time his time. It wasn’t looking good for my words.
But I’ve been on a streak for a couple weeks now and the quota needed to stay on it was so low that I was more certain than not that I could get it done if I just tried. So I brushed my teeth and washed my face and got ready for bed and then I grabbed my laptop and my earplugs and my phone. And I wrote 250 words.
And then I wrote 600 more.
I got my words in.
The power of a low bar.

WWT Tool Kit Craft Card
As mentioned before, I’m making a deck of craft cards to quickly remind myself of techniques while also having a convenient place to keep track of elements like character, conflict, and theme specific to each story. This week’s card is a reminder about elements in a sequence.
Thank you for reading!
I hope this helped you, and I hope your writing goes well this week.
Keep at it,
Megan
